How to Reset your MacBook Login Password (if you've forgotten it)
The below are the steps you need to take if you need to reset your MacBook Login Password:
***You will need to contact IT and request a FileVault Recovery Key to reset your password (step 6)***
MacBooks (2020-):
- Turn off your MacBook completely
- Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
- Select the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.
- There should be a Reset Password or Forgot your Password button - please select this.
- You may be asked to select your User Account or type in the name of your User Account (Zoe Johnson) - select/type it
- When prompted for a File Recovery key, please use the key from IT
- You should be able to reset your password
- Restart/shut down your Mac
MacBooks (2019 or older):
- Turn off your MacBook completely
- Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until you see an Apple logo or other image.
- Enter your FileVault recovery key
When prompted to reset your password, click Reset Password.
Select a user to reset the password for.
After successfully authenticating, click Exit.
Your MacBook will restart
